Progressive Collapse Resistance Competition (PCRC)

To predict progressive collapse resistance of a small scale 2-D physical model of an RC structure following predefined initial damage. The model will be tested at Northeastern University by the competition organizer. Detailed characteristics of the physical model and the initial damage will be provided through the PCRC website on September 11, 2007. Participating teams are required to develop analytical models, answer specific questions and predict the response of the physical model.

The competition will be carried out at two levels:

Level 1: Undergraduate Students

Level 2: Graduate Students and Professionals

• Competition will start on September 11, 2007.
• Registration will be from August 15, 2007 to October 12, 2007.
• Deadline for submission of reports is November 16, 2007.
• Test will be conducted and webcast live on November 28, 2007.
• Winners will be announced on February 29, 2008.
• Award ceremony will be held in April 25, 2008.

Undeformed System Vertical Displacement = 2.5 in.
Pilot Test

The purpose of this competition is to provide undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professionals (engineers, architects and other professionals) an opportunity to learn about progressive collapse resistance of reinforced concrete structures. We hope that this will enhance contestants understanding about: collapse resistant mechanisms, modeling techniques for progressive collapse analyses, system level response of reinforced concrete structures, and importance of reinforcement detailing on dynamic load redistribution following initial failure.

Sample Questions

Will the system collapse?

Describe resisting mechanisms.

What will be the maximum vertical displacement?

At what vertical displacement the first reinforcing bar will fracture, if any?

Evaluation Process

Using the guideline provided (see Rules and Grading Rubric), a panel of experts will select the winners. The identities of contestants will not be provided to the panel.
